Local Handyman & Carpentry in Kenilworth

Older homes around Old Town and the castle can have a shape all their own. A low ceiling, a beam in the way or a room that slopes towards the eaves can make standard furniture a poor fit. Rather than lose that space, I can measure it and make storage to follow the room. The fitted loft wardrobes in my photos are an example of the kind of work I mean: the doors and storage sit beneath the slope instead of leaving an awkward gap.

Narrow or steep staircases can also benefit from a properly fitted handrail. If you’re thinking about one, a photo showing the stairs and the wall is a useful place to start. Doors in older houses sometimes drop or begin to catch, too. I can look at whether the door and fittings need adjusting before assuming the whole thing needs replacing. Send me photos of the problem, including the frame and hinges, so I can get a clearer idea of what’s involved.

As a family’s things accumulate, it’s often the odd spaces that could do more work. A bedroom in a loft conversion might have plenty of floor area but very little full-height wall. An alcove may be just too narrow for a freestanding unit. I make fitted wardrobes and alcove shelves to suit those spaces, with the layout planned around what you actually want to put away. The smaller cupboards matter as well. Slatted shelves can make an airing cupboard more useful without filling it with bulky furniture. In a living room, a radiator cover with a window bench can turn an otherwise awkward stretch of wall into seating and storage. Not every useful change needs to be large. In a bungalow, a well-placed handrail, a door that opens without sticking or cupboard doors that close properly can make day-to-day use of the house easier. I can help with handrails, easing doors, adjusting cupboard doors and replacing or sorting handles and other fittings.

If you’ve noticed several little problems, photograph each one and send them together. A close-up of a loose handle helps, but a wider photo showing where it sits helps too.
